The town's history runs deep. Downtown Hillsboro grew up around agriculture and the railroad in the late 1800s, and much of that story is still visible today. The Hill County Courthouse, a striking Second Empire building designed by W.C. Dodson and completed in 1890, still anchors the town square. After the courthouse burned down, it was rebuilt in 1999 with help from Hill County native and music legend Willie Nelson. Around the square, well-preserved brick storefronts from the late 1800s and early 1900s tell the story of the town's growth.
History lovers have plenty to explore here. The Hill County Cell Block Museum, built in 1893 and used as the county jail until 1983, features a tribute to Willie Nelson along with historic exhibits. Nearby, the Texas Heritage Museum at Hill College holds more than 16,000 artifacts spanning from the 1830s to today. The town's residential historic district features homes built between 1890 and 1930 in styles ranging from Queen Anne to Prairie.
Shoppers and foodies will feel right at home too. Downtown is full of local favorites like Hillsboro Mercantile, the Hillsboro Antique Mall, and Overflow Coffee & Cafe, plus dining spots like Diaz Tex-Mex and Wrangler's Cafe & Entertainment. For travelers, Buc-ee’s is located just off the interstate.
Outdoor lovers aren't left out either—Lake Whitney and Lake Aquilla are both close by for boating and fishing. With its mix of history, charm, and easy highway access, Hillsboro is a great fit for buyers who want small-town roots without giving up big-city convenience.
